National Ship Research Panel (NSRP) Charleston, SC

Charleston, South Carolina hosted the Annual NSRP meeting which was a four day event. For those of you who are not familiar with the NSRP, this group was originally formed as a collaboration of members from all ship and boat yards around the U.S. that are involved in some way in the manufacturing, rebuilding, repair or any portion of retrofitting any vessels that are used and controlled in U.S. waters.  


This group was once originally made up of those only working within that industry and a way for that group, even though they are often competitors, to join forces and work together. They share designs, technology and ways to better meet their own production goals as well as the goals of their customers. Since their customers often are the US government and the US Military and Navy, the amount of regulations and goals that must be met, are to say the least, tremendous.  Since the goal of this panel is to problem solve and share ideas, many manufactures like Bug-O Systems who offer solutions to this industry have since joined the NSRP. Bug-O Systems has been a member for many years and has in the past hosted one of their quarterly meetings.  


As with past Welding Technology Panel Meetings and discussions, the general focus is on the introduction of new technologies which is likely to benefit the use of Welding Mechanization in the Shipyard Industry. This meeting was held in cooperation and support from over 12 US shipyards in attendance for the entire four days. For the second time in the past year, the event panel was held to introduce new projects and update members on ongoing and concluding projects to be considered for implementation. Additionally this year, two projects have come to light that would likely further benefit the use of welding mechanization in the industry. Some of the new projects included Improved GMAW/FCAW on Primed Steel and Low Temperature Transformation Welding Wire. Up to this point, the idea of having to weld over primed steel often led to more work than what was originally planned. Oftentimes poor quality welds result and costly rework ensues and/or the task of having to grind all the primer away was done before welding, which is an additional waste of time and money since the primer was only a temporary covering to prevent rust and corrosion. The other project that should benefit the Weld Mechanization Community is the future use of the Low Temperature Transformation Wire. This wire has been manufactured to resist shrinking after it cools which all current wires do to this point. The use of this wire in conjunction with BUG-O Products would improve cost savings and rework by a substantial amount compared to current hand welding practices. There were more than 27 various breakout sessions during the program, but of course not all of these were related to welding. However, needless to say, this was the largest attendance I have ever seen and the largest number of breakout sessions and topics covered.     

In conclusion, this was truly a working meeting and I personally believe that this was designed such because the need for commercial ships and vessels for the U.S. Navy and Military are growing.
